Sustainability

Sustainability has been a central part of MANU Touristik's corporate philosophy from the very beginning. On this page we would like to introduce you to our sustainability strategy.

Sustainability strategy

Usually, sustainability is considered three-dimensionally: economic, social and ecological interests must be taken into account. Transferred to our company MANU Touristik, a sustainability strategy could be formulated as follows: we want to organise successful MANU mountain holidays in a sustainable way, if possible without negative impacts on society or the environment.

We understand environmental protection as more than just avoiding CO2 emissions. With our commitment to the protection forest, we want to contribute to adapting the vital protection forest in the Swiss mountains to the challenges of climate change. The associated effect on the storage of CO2 is considerable, but due to the slow growth it only occurs after several decades. The focus here is rather on aspects such as regeneration, adaptation and increasing biodiversity.

Our climate protection goals

We commit to the Glasgow Declaration of Tourism Businesses and pledge to reduce MANU Tourism's C02 emissions (Scope 1-3) by at least 50% by 2030 compared to the baseline year 2021.

At the same time, we want to motivate as many MANU customers as possible to travel by train, because this can also significantly reduce the CO2 emissions of MANU trips.

CO2 balance of the MANU invoice

With the Declaration on Climate Protection in Tourism, more than 300 tourism companies committed in Glasgow in November 2021 to significantly reduce the emissions they cause. The signatories made a binding commitment to reduce C02 emissions by 50% by 2030 and, if possible, to operate in a climate-neutral manner by 2050. In any case, the starting point of such a climate protection strategy is first of all the determination of the current CO2 balance.

For the preparation of our CO2 balance, we have initiated a cooperation with ClimatePartner AG in Zurich. ClimatePartner determined the C02 balance of MANU Faktur in Chur in the base year 2021 according to the guidelines of the Greenhouse Protocol and scientific criteria.

Our total result in CO2 emissions is 42.828,07 kg CO2

The figure shows the emission sources of MANU Touristik. When reducing climate-damaging emissions, it is particularly worthwhile to start where the most emissions are generated. At MANU Touristik, this is clearly the area of printed matter, as the following table clearly shows:

If we want to halve our CO2 emissions by 2030, we must gradually reduce the amount of printed matter. As long as we are still dependent on printed matter, we will increasingly rely on environmentally friendly recycled paper with the Blue Angel seal of approval. This not only significantly reduces emissions during production, but also ensures that no toxic substances are used in the printing process.

As a first step, we have reduced the size of the present catalogue from 124 to 100 pages, which corresponds to a saving of almost 20% in the amount of paper used. In the meantime, we have switched to sending travel documents by e-mail, which saves further emissions. At the moment we are still working on a technical solution for completely paper-free travel documents. In the future, travel documents will no longer be printed out at all, but only presented on the mobile phone and checked by the service providers.

Enjoyable and sustainable holidays

No one will seriously deny that travel is an indispensable part of our lives. Travelling brings relaxation, new experiences and broadens our horizons. But does it always have to be a flight or a cruise? Particularly in view of climate protection, a responsible approach to travel is more important today than ever before.

How sustainable are MANU mountain holidays? "Holidays in the mountains bring a high recreational value and - when travelling by train or bus - contribute relatively little to the greenhouse problem" writes WWF Germany in its brochure "The touristic climate footprint" from 2009, which is well worth reading. Nothing about this has changed to date.

MANU mountain holidays are therefore decidedly climate-friendly, especially if you, dear guests, choose to travel by train. German railways use 100% green electricity, at least for long-distance travel. The Swiss SBB uses 90% and the Rhaetian Railway in Graubünden even 100% electricity from domestic hydropower.

We continue to work on making MANU mountain holidays as enjoyable as they are climate-friendly. Following the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, even the most challenging path begins with the first step. Many more will have to follow.

One thing is certain: by choosing MANU mountain holidays, you are already making an important contribution to environmental and climate protection. We want to reward you for this. From 2023 onwards, we will plant a tree for every travel booking you make as part of our new partnership for the protection forest in the Swiss mountains. Read more on the next pages.
